They moved north to take advantage of the factory jobs in the north since the south was mainly agricultural with little mechanization. Black people could have the same hobbies as white people if they wanted to. (During this day and age.) First one is for the early migration 1840-1890 and the second one for the period 1940-1970.Use the im! ages and text links under Browse Migration Resources. These will give you some idea of what life was like and what people looked like (a plantation hand in 1840 might look rather different from his great, great grandchildren). You might find the texts harder to use.
