answers 0:I just adopted a 6 year old, Brussels Griffin. He is 20 pounds exactly. Severally overweight, considering their ideal weight is 8-10 pounds.answers 1:Exercise, Exercise, Exercise! These dogs need regular exercise, maybe go jogging with them or play a fun game of catch!BTW, they are so cute!answers 2:Don't judge a dog on breed standards for weight, use the feel test. For most dogs, and there are exceptions, an ideal weight is where you can just feel the dogs ribs but they are not visible. With a very furry dog you obviously have to go by feel.First, I'd see your vet to be sure there isn't an underlying medical reason, like thyroid issues. Then I'd get the dog gradually exersizing more and put it on a calorie restricted diet. Again, your vet is a good source of information about how much and which food this dog should have....! answers 3:Good food will help, of course make sure that food is being fed in the correct amount. A crappy brand has carbs, fats and other controversial ingredients whereas a higher quality food has more real meat, no grains, less carbs and a few vegetables. While they aren't required a few veggies aren't bad. Good brands are Merricks, orijen, canidae, acana, taste of the wild, instinct, Evangers or Evo.For treats, only give him some for training. Too many treats for no reason are probably the main cause of overweight dogs, aside from exercise. The treats I recommend are freeze dried... Very low in calories and very healthy as all it is, is pure meat. They should sell it at any pet store. They have liver, lamb, chicken, whitefish, salmon, turkey, beef etc.You can also give him a raw meaty bone, like a beef rib, twice a week. They aren't fattening, and very good for dental hygiene. You NEED to walk him every single day. Exercise is most important. For him, I'd walk him twice! . Once in the morning, then again at night. I'm not sure how l! ong of a walk he can handle, but I'd start out doing shorter walks until he gets used to walking and has shed a few pounds....answers 4:Same as with a person - less food, more exercise.First thing to do is get a health check to make sure he doesn't have any health issues - like arthritis - and can tolerate exercise. Then cut down his food by about 25%, no snacks, no treats. And start increasing the exercise slowly. Play ball to get him moving. To lose the weight in a healthy way, it needs to be done slowsly....
