Moira Woodrow: I'm guessing, by the little info you gave, that the answer would be public records (military records, cemetery info, census, tax records, etc) and word of mouth/family tradition (things written in a family Bible, old personal letters, stories told by grandparents, family pictures, etc.)

Public ones are things like census entries, birth, marriage and death certs., articles in newspapers (weddings and obituaries, mostly.)Private ones are letters, family bibles, stories your grandfather told you . . .
