What plants are the best to plant in rock gardens?

Gene Debell: Look for plants that respond best to a well drained soil. Usually Cacti, Palms, desert shrubs like the Texas Ranger etc. Consider using a mulch layer under the rock bed or adding organic compost, this will help keep some moisture content and increase the organic qualities allowing you to plant a larger variety of plant. Water is always the main ingredient needed along with minerals in the soil. If you have those 2 you will be OK. The problem with a rock bed is that water runs off and does not stay long enough for root absorption, so think of ways to increase the amount of time the water stays on the root....Show more
